Lost Letters of Perganum

The Lost Letters of Perineum, portrays an assortment of anecdotal letters being traded between two anecdotal characters known as Antipasti and Luke. Antipasti is a promoter from Rome, and Luke is a doctor and writer of the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. Luke is likewise the primary individual who Antipasti goes to all through the novel for information and answers to his numerous inquiries. The story is very elegantly composed and gives the peruser a thought of what the main century Church was like. The letters likewise show a striking image of Chrism's life and the impacts his someone who is addicted way of life had on the antiquated culture. Antipasti, a self-built up promoter, lives from the urban areas of Tree and Caesar in Rome and is an admirer of Jupiter and Culprits. Offenders, an aristocrat from the city of Ephesus, left when he abruptly lost his firstborn kid. Because of his nonappearance, Antipasti turned out to be immediately familiar with Luke, whom was shrewd and en thusiastic about his convictions in Jesus Christ. After Antipasti and Luke started keeping in touch with one another for some time, their discussions began to lean more towards the subject of otherworldly issues and explicitly towards Lake's choice to follow Jesus Christ and his chips away at Chrism's life. After much chronicled and profound conversation, the two moved to the subject of the gladiatorial occasions, in which individuals were butchered before many others for amusement. Antipasti was starting to scrutinize the occasions and the ethical quality of it all.As the two became further into their otherworldly discussion and Luke shared a greater amount of his perspectives on Christ, Antipasti became extremely inquisitive. He started perusing an account by Luke about Jesus Christ, and revealed to Luke his considerations and sentiments about his work. Antipasti' interest before long drove him to join a cooperation of Christians in his town drove by an a named Notations. He met wi th the gathering normally and saw what an immense impact Christ had on their cutting edge culture. Antipasti developed to find out about Christ and accepted he was without a doubt the Son of God.His energy for him developed, and he realized that he should start venerating Christ and not Jupiter. As Antipasti' confidence developed more grounded he before long ended up challenging the gladiatorial occasions. He found that his Christian sibling, Demerits, was to be killed and concluded that he was unable to permit such a demonstration to occur. Antipasti relinquished himself for Demerits and was executed in his place by being earned alive. The peruser realizes that Antipasti relinquished himself for what he put stock in, for the brilliance of God.I discovered it very intriguing that Antipasti had become so enthusiastic and faithful to the Christian religion in such a brief timeframe period. He made himself mindful and instructed and joined different Christians in confidence despite the fact that he realized they were profoundly unaccepted in their way of life. He freed himself up to another lifestyle and left behind his old convictions that he held on for quite a long time. Was stunning how Antipasti could become so faithful to a religion he simply learned of, than o one he had been adoring a large portion of his life.He became so cherishing and dependable toward his new Christian convictions that he was happy to kick the bucket for another man and for a God he had quite recently begun to follow. Issues talked about in the present current culture comprises of numerous individuals accepting that Christians are bugged for their convictions and oppressed for their venerates. In any case, whatever contention they experience today has no correlation with the impacts of being Christian in the principal century. Today there are numerous Christians yet rare sorts of people who really have a solid enthusiasm for the Gospel. There are a large number of individuals today who are glad to call themselves Christians, however would there still be so a lot if the results were all the while being beaten or killed before a group? Does the energy of Christ lit within Antipasti still exist in any Christian today? In spite of the fact that the story was anecdotal, the depiction of the main century was precise. There were numerous individuals like Antipasti who were killed for going to bat for their convictions; maybe the message here is for all advanced Christians to rethink the manner in which they're following Christ, and to utilize Antipasti' energy and dedication for instance to live by.

4 Books to Read While Waiting for the Twin Peaks Revival

4 Books to Read While Waiting for the Twin Peaks Revival via GIPHY As I’m sure that any Twin Peaks loving Rioters know, IT IS HAPPENING AGAIN: We know shooting has wrapped, but we don’t know exactly when we’ll be back at the Double R, the place where pies go when they die, drinking coffee that’s black as midnight on a moonless night. The closest we have to a release date is the “first-half to midyear, the early side of mid-year 2017”â€"which, for those of us who’ve been waiting for two decades, is maddeningly vague. But in the meantime, we’ve got books to tide us over! The Secret History of Twin Peaks, by Mark Frost I bought this book in two formats: physical and audio. On purpose, even! Which is a first for me. But I needed them both. NEEDED THEM. I bought the physical copy, because it looked so absolutely beautiful. And I haven’t been disappointed. It’s a dossier compiled by a mysterious figure known only as “The Archivist,” found in July of this year at an active crime sceneâ€"a crime scene that, the cover flap explains, is “classified three levels above top secret.” In the margins are notes from the FBI agent who has been assigned to read, analyse, and fact check itâ€"her initials, appropriately, are TP. I haven’t sat down and read it cover to cover yetâ€"it just doesn’t feel like that kind of bookâ€"but every time I open it, I find a treasure. In this spread, for instance, I found out what happened in the aftermath of the explosion at the Twin Peaks Savings and Loan at the end of Season Two: And, while  I hardly ever listen to audiobooksâ€"I’m such a visual listener that I can’t listen while driving because I START  seeing a mind’s eye movie and  STOP seeing the road, which is somewhat dangerousâ€"and while  the book’s format is so, so visually appealing, I needed the audiobook, too. NEEDED IT. Because, rather than one reader, there are manyâ€"including four actors from the original series: Kyle MacLachlan, Russ Tamblyn, Michael Horse, and David Patrick Kelly: I admit to nearly swooning out of my chair when Michael Horse’s part started. *heart eyes* Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaks, by Brad Dukes   THIS BOOK. If you’re a Twin Peaks person and you haven’t already read it, you are in for a huge, HUGE treat. It’s a collection of first-hand accountsâ€"stories about each other, about things that happened on set, about what it was like to work on one of the most iconic shows of the 1990sâ€"from the cast, creators, and crew. So many gems in this bookâ€"every single page has something on it that either makes my heart all fuzzy or makes me want to run around in gleeful circles. The Essential Wrapped In Plastic: Pathways to Twin Peaks, by John Thorne   A show that ran for a season and a half inspired a magazine that ran for thirteen years. Which says a lot about Twin Peaks, right? Anyway, this is a collection of essays and interviews that ran in the magazine, and that also includes a comprehensive episode guide, scripts of deleted scenes, and commentary from cast and crew and so on. Lots of goodies! The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, by Jennifer Lynch This is Laura Palmer’s diary. The one that Harold Smith hid for her, the one in which she wrote  about Killer BOB, the one in which she told secrets about Ben Horne, the one that got all torn up and had to be reassembled. Hoo boy, we passed this book around on the school bus the same way that we passed Flowers in the Attic around. My middle schooler eyeballs POPPED. I own multiple copies of it, because I can just never seem to walk away from it when I spot it at yard sales. It might be a weird book of the heart, I guess, but here we are. Looking for even more? A Twin Peaks cookbook  just came out, so you could start practicing new dishes for next year’s viewing parties… or if youre feeling more highbrow, you could pre-order this one. (Lets be honestâ€"I know I’m going to end up buying  both.) Even more? DONT MIND IF I DO!: See this list of Twin Peaks-y comics, or this list of Twin Peaks-y YA books! Until sometime next year, thenâ€"if you need me Ill be out in the woods, looking for the White Lodge. Sign up for Audiobooks to receive the latest from the audiobooks world. Thank you for signing up! Criminal Behavior And The Justice System Essay - 1361 Words

Incarceration rates are extremely costly and the rates of incarceration are alarmingly high in the United States. Individuals engage in criminal behaviors for many reasons. Although the reasons are numerous and vary, the justice system has attempted to narrow down the causes of criminal behavior. The justice system has also put into place specialty courts that are designed to better address these particular causes of criminal behavior. The goal of these courts is to better address the individual’s reason that they engaged in criminal behavior in hopes that with the additional support, in the future the individual will become a productive member of society. What are specialty Courts? Specialty courts are becoming more and more popular throughout the country. Specialty courts are also commonly referred to as problem-solving courts. These courts mainly focus on a specific type of criminal offense or a cause of a criminal offense. Specialty courts differ from the traditional court system. Traditional court systems are not always equipped to effectively deal with certain needs of the offenders that they come into contact with. Specialty courts are set up to help better address certain issues and are able to provide options that are specific to the offender’s needs. The Bronze David By Donatello Of The Early Renaissance

The Bronze David by Donatello of the Early Renaissance shows a subtle transition through style and form to the High Renaissance when compared to the marble David by Michelangelo. Yet a similar Renaissance interpretation of the character of David is seen in both pieces. Donatello’s David embodies the humanism and classicism of the Italian Renaissance, and pioneers styles that would influence a generation. The perfection of David by Michelangelo creates a similar allusion to humanism and classical form while indicating Donatello’s lasting influence and inserting neoplatonic ideas of the High Renaissance. Through his Bronze David, 1430, Donatello documents a biblical character in a form that captures the ideals of the Italian Renaissance. The five foot and two inch piece recreates the moment after the human hero David slays Goliath whose head lies at his feet. The structure, Figure 1, not only celebrates the use of human wit and potential, but David’s nudity emphas izes the human body’s physical grace. In addition, the figure’s bareness is accentuated by the calf length boots and large hat. The use of the free standing style allows the human form to be appreciated at every angle. This quintessential instance of human heroism is documented by the artist and articulated by the sculpture with an air of nonchalance. The poetic and heroic indifference and self-satisfaction expressed in Donatello’s David is classified as sprezzatura. Sprezzatura is the idyllic attitude of a humanShow MoreRelatedSculpture and Donatello1480 Words   |  6 Pages#9; Donatello (1386-1466) was a master of sculpture in bronze and marble and was considered one of the greatest Italian Renaissance artists of his time. Advertisement Analysis American Beauty Free Essays

Ever since civilization began, trends have socialized groups on how to dress, think, and act; it becomes an absolute necessity to support whatever is in vogue or risk ostracization. Modern businesses create advertising in American media by following these cultural trends. Whether it is through periodicals, radio, or the all powerful television these companies use effective methods to psychologically convince their intended audience to buy either a product or service. We will write a custom essay sample on Advertisement Analysis: American Beauty or any similar topic only for you Order Now These advertisements perfectly reflect how Americans perceive sex, social status, and gender roles. A prime example of this concept is a television commercial by Old Spice soliciting scented body wash to women with boyfriends or husbands. The sales pitch begins with an attractive black male in a bathroom egotistically claiming superiority over every woman’s significant other adding that men make a mistake in their body wash which is actually buying anything other than Old Spice. The setting spontaneously changes to a yacht at sea where the actor woos his female audience with show tickets and diamonds. The actor then confidently promises that if their men smell like Old Spice as well then anything is possible. As a final note, he randomly confesses that he is on a horse as a catchy jingle plays in the background. This commercial is extremely effective in selling to women by creating a stereotypical romantic man to serve as a salesman. The advertisement conveys the notion that women will only be satisfied if their men are not only very attractive but can provide a lifestyle of infinite luxury using humor, subconscious promises of success, and the Old Spice man himself. Humor is the most explicit tool this advertisement uses in appealing to the audience being over the top to produce positive emotions within each viewer. The most apparent example is how cocky the Old Spice man is in his presentation of the product. It is amusing how he arrogantly degrades other men for their use of â€Å"lady scented body wash† and how they unfortunately cannot be him. The Old Spice man’s presentation is so egotistical yet suave one cannot help but be amused. Spontaneous scene changes from a bathroom to a yacht to on a horse are also ridiculously hilarious because they are random. The positive emotions evoked by humor are pivotal in order to sell a product. After watching the funny commercial positive feelings resurface whenever someone sees the same product inside a store; the odds that they will buy Old Spice body wash over another brand become very high. This concept brings to light that in American culture people enjoy humor. Humor can provide variations to a monotonous lifestyle as well as make people happy. Most people do not actively seek to be depressed so if humor can lead to amusement then people will actively seek for positive reinforcement. The writers of the Old Spice commercial understand the importance of humor and incorporate it with selling their personal hygiene product so that people will psychologically associate the two together. The association of an emotional response with a tangible object is not uncommon with advertisements because it is an effective way to sell on a subconscious level. By incorporating images of materialistic wealth such as a yacht, diamonds, and horseback riding on a beach Old Spice appeals to the American desire to possess limitless wealth. On the advertisement, the Old Spice man falsely claims that â€Å"anything is possible if your man smells like Old Spice† as he possesses excellent physique and is surrounded by various forms of materialistic wealth. To women the advertisement subconsciously implies that if they buy Old Spice body wash it is possible for their men to own a yacht, diamonds, and horseback ride on a tropical beach. The commercial wants to invoke feelings of desire and associate them with their product so that people will buy it. For middle class Americans, the demographic group whom the advertisement primarily targets, it is very possible to achieve a comfortable standard of wealth being able to eventually retire and live a lifestyle the way they please. Most people do not actively seek to become destitute therefore advertisements wisely do not portray the Old Spice man as homeless in a gutter using body wash to smell clean. The association of their product with negative imagery would result in poor product sales because feelings evoked by imagery like humor attach to a product in the minds of viewers. Understanding human psychology is pivotal in soliciting a product. The advertisement’s most powerful tool in attracting attention toward Old Spice body wash is sexual appeal because within American culture sex is a sensitive topic often considered taboo in conservative social circles. The Old Spice man exudes enough confidence to be considered arrogant, has irresistible charm, and has a sexy body in the eyes of women; he is the archetype of a romantic lover. The Old Spice man is deliberately placed in the advertisement to distract women from making a completely rational decision in buying the personal hygiene product. The real message the commercial makes is to specifically buy Old Spice body wash but the product is not even introduced until a full ten seconds after the advertisement begins with the attractive man commanding women to â€Å"look at your man, now back to me† three times. What women really observe is a romantic fantasy with the man their man can smell like on a boat showered with luxury gifts. The advertisement reflects the cultural belief that women lust for an attractive and wealthy man; it also plays on the racial stereotype that men of African descent are sexually well endowed being that the Old Spice man is black. For men specifically Old Spice implies that it will make them more desirable in the eyes of women smelling no longer like a lady but a man. This concept demonstrates how powerful sex appeal is in the advertisement epitomized by the Old Spice man himself. Old Spice wants to make their product sexually desirable so it will sell. Without the element of sex many products would not sell as well as they presently do because there is no explicit desire attached. People like sex. More specifically, people long to become sexually attractive and if a product can make a promise to do so people will buy it. It is well understood that companies make advertisements to sell their product to make a profit. In order to stand out among the competition advertisements play on the psychology of targeted viewers by making references to humor, misleading information, and sex. In American culture sex is the most powerful because of how sex is socially perceived as indecent or lewd while being very much ingrained within society. It is to retailer’s advantage that a product carries an additional label beyond its intended use because of how people like to think they are getting more with what they pay for. It can be very easy for consumers to fall for ploys by advertisements; they are Venus fly traps set to catch their next prey. How to cite Advertisement Analysis: American Beauty, Papers

Maymont-Descriptive Paper

Maymont-Descriptive Paper Cody IrvineProfessor Cynthia HalsteadEnglish 106 -71 September 2014A Walk Through Maymont ParkSince I was a young child, my parents have been taking my sister and I to Maymont Park in Richmond, Virginia. One Sunday a month, my parents would wake us up to the smell of bacon and homemade French toast. After breakfast we would all get dressed while my mom made a picnic lunch for the family. Then the four of us, my sister, my parents, and I, would pile into the car and start our twenty-minute journey to Maymont Park.Once we got to Maymont, we could smell barn animals and flowers. It was always a beautiful day, with the bright sun bringing out the vivid color of all of the flowers that filled the entrance. The sound of giggling children filled the air. Everyone is always happy at Maymont. At the gates there was a huge wooden wall with animals painted on it.English: The Dooley Mansion at Maymont, in Richmon...Each animal had a small slot above it connected to a collection bin on the opposi te side so you could donate money to whatever species you would like. My parents would give my sister and I each a dollar, and I always put mine in to the black bear. When we passed the animal donation center, we walked out into a busy and exciting petting zoo. My parents gave me a quarter to get some animal feed from the machine. I went straight to the Billy goats. I loved the excitement they showed when someone had food for them. They would lick the food right out of your hand. I was too happy to care about the sticky slime they left behind from their tongues, but my mom always brought hand sanitizer, and she wouldn't let me...

What to Do on a Long Weekend

What to Do on a Long Weekend Not sure what to do on a long weekend coming up? From Labor Day in the fall to Presidents Day in the spring, long weekends are a wonderful break from the craziness of college. Unfortunately, however, they can often slip away quite quickly, somehow leaving you with more to do than before the weekend started and no idea of where your time went. So how can you make the most of your long weekends in college? Aim for the 1-1-1 Plan A basic idea that can make your weekend all you need and more: Spend 1 day on personal stuff, like doing laundry, going to the store, catching up on sleep, and exercising. Spend 1 day doing fun and social stuff, like doing something off campus during the day, hanging out at a Greek house, and attending a campus party. Spend 1 day doing homework. The best part? While doing the fun stuff, you dont have to feel guilty, since youll already have done or scheduled in when to do the not-so-fun stuff. Get off campus You may need to head home to get some TLC. You may want to spend a romantic weekend away with your partner. Or you may just want to take a road trip with some friends to somewhere youve never been before. No matter where or why you go, though, you might be surprised at how much better and more energized you feel when you get back. Start preparing for graduate school tests Do you know youll have to take the GRE? MCAT? LSAT? GMAT? No matter what test you have to take, youll definitely have to study for it. Take the extra time you have over the long weekend to figure out a study plan- and start on it. Volunteer Nothing helps keep things in perspective like volunteering. If youre feeling overwhelmed with your responsibilities in college, consider volunteering one morning of the long weekend. Youll undoubtedly get a new look on things while helping out those who are less fortunate. Kick-start/Refocus on your health Did you plan to live a little healthier this year in school? Have those resolutions fallen by the wayside? Consider using the long weekend as an opportunity to refocus on your health. Catch up on sleep, eat well, exercise, and figure out a few healthy ways to keep the momentum going for the rest of the semester. Organize your college life Does it sound lame? You betcha. Will you be glad you did it? Holy cow, yes. Crank up the music in your room and get to work. Clean up your living space, do your laundry, organize stuff for your classes, get your time management system in order, and overall get your college life in order. True, not many people like cleaning up stuff, but nearly everyone likes clean stuff. Just focus on how much better things will feel (and work! and look!) afterward. Get a head start on your academics In looking at your course syllabi, do you know you are going to be completely slammed at the end of the semester? Consider getting a little ahead of your class projects. True, you may not need or want to finish up your research project, but doing something simple like spending a few hours focusing on a topic means you can spend time later in the semester doing research on that topic instead of aimlessly trying to find one when youre stressed out. Earn some extra cash Most long weekends come with big sales at retail shops. Consider applying for a temporary position or, if you already work in retail, asking for extra hours over the long weekend so that you can have some extra cash in your pocket. Spend time researching your future Eliminate a little stress in your life (cue your parents voices: What are you going to do after graduation? What about this summer? Have you even thought about it yet?) by at least starting to look into what your options might be. You can look at short-term options what to do for Spring Break, what to do over the summer - as well as long term options, like graduate school or job opportunities. Get your resume and a cover letter together No matter what youre doing this summer, chances are youll need a resume. Whether youre applying for jobs, looking at internships, considering studying abroad, or getting materials ready for graduate school, your resume (and possibly a cover letter) will be an important part of the process. Put something together as best you can- and then make sure to have someone at the campus career center look it over.

A Stakeholder Perspective Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

A Stakeholder Perspective - Essay Example Since the technology was invented it has been faced with numerous debates some challenging its legitimacy while other proposing for its implementation due to the benefits that come along it (Young). Statistics from WTP indicate t there are close to one hundred strains of genetically modified organism that have be developed so far with approximately forty of them being implemented in the farms for large scale production purposes (Weirich). Despite the strong opposition that have marred the implementation of genetically modified organisms in a number of countries across the world these organisms have numerous of advantages to various stakeholders in the agricultural sector (Koch and Bjarte). For instance, the strains that are genetically modified are often resistant to pests and diseases; they depict tolerance to drought and herbicides at the same time they have enhanced nutritional enrichment as compared to the traditional crops. Despite this advantages a number of arguments have been advanced regarding genetically modified organisms ranging from their safety to if elaborate legislation measures have been put in place to regulate their use and distribution (Consumers Food Safety and Environment) This paper will be arguing on the genetically modified organism debate from a farmer’s perspective based in Ghana. Ghana is a third world country based in Africa and thus it is classified among the group of developing countries that face economic and food security problems over time. Farming in third world countries like Ghana is not sophisticated in terms of farm machinery and thus most of the farming is done for substance purposes (Koch and Bjarte). Commercial farming is done on a small scale by organizations which can afford to implement mechanization in the firms in terms of buying the expensive machines that are required to implement large-scale production of crops as well as the farm inputs that are required

Design Phases in High Rise Building Foundation

Design Phases in High Rise Building Foundation Problems in foundation engineering are the selection of suitable beds and foundation for high rise building is one of the known problems in high rise building. In no of cases it has been discovered that the designing of building foundations goes beyond the limits of normative documents and their construction. As per requirement to ultimate strength bearing capacity especially for high rise building designs are extremely strict. Beds and foundations are quite important phenomena in design and construction of high rise building foundation. There are currently recommended foundation types where piles, combined pile-raft foundations and mat foundations are considered. Ground engineering known as geo-technical design procedures consists on several stages to gain the design of a foundation which is carried out from feasibility study to final geo-technical design followed by concept realisation and soil investigation. Researches has been carried out in accordance to design of high rise building foundation and no of ideas has been brought forward in which anchored slab foundations, raft piled foundations, mat foundations and group of piles or piles can be used for high rise buildings. Typically for high rise building foundations normally piles or group of piles are used for less than thirty floors with the diameter of 0-8 meters having length of 1-40 meters in the case of using wall in the soil ground assuming a parameter structure wall with reinforcement concrete having thickness of 60-1.5 meter which includes basement walls. While considering foundations for high rise building a major part is to aim the reduction of settlement in the new built structure to ensure the safety and sustainability with subject to long life of foundation. In most cases there can be possibilities that the soil type and ground conditions may lead to deep foundations with respect to transfer the high ultimate loads to the soil with the high bearing capacities. In case of bearing capacity of foundation which depends upon soil type, in case of high rise building foundation piles or combined piled-raft foundations are used to accommodate the allowable bearing capacity with subject to soil type and site conditions. In some cases ground water improvement is also necessary especially in urban areas to improve the volume of voids in the soil in order to built high rise building foundation to get the allowable bearing capacity and allowable foundation settlement to resist the failure of foundation. The literature review shows that a very little research work has been carried out to understand the types of foundation with subject to settlement and bearing capacity of soils effect on high rise building foundations. In view of foregoing ,by using the advance computer modelling techniques by considering case study, a no of numerical model based on standard finite-element method will be developed to investigate the behaviours of high rise building foundation by proposing a reliable foundation for high rise building with subject to settlement of foundation considering the simplified hand calculations comparing with the finite element which will be gained from computer modelling with accordance to load and other factors affecting on proposed foundation. Further in case study investigation will be carried out to examine sensitivity and limits of foundation settlements, factors affecting on settlement of foundation in accordance to load and displacement finally, a set of suggestions will be framed for future improvements of design criteria for foundations. Project proposal The selected topic of the project modelling and design of high rise building foundation is based on advanced computer based numerical modelling and a case study. Aim and objective of the project The selected project aims to understand the behaviour of foundations for high rise building Construction. The factor of settlement with respect to load and how the displacement occurs. How the ground improvements can take place. Bearing capacity of soils in case study with respect to the foundation type. Application of advanced computer based numerical modelling techniques will be utilised to compare the hand calculated results. The comparison of experimental results (case study) versus numerical modelling will be carried out to analysis the degree of agreement of both results. The scope of this project is to study the behaviour of foundations which can be used for high rise building structures. Deliverables The effect of load and displacement will be carried out with subject to settlement, bearing capacity of soils and ground water improvement The trend of modes of failure will be carried out on the performance of designed foundation Based on investigation and previous carried out a conceptual model will be developed with the help of case study. Konyukhov.Scientific-Research Institute of Foundations and Underground. Structures and, Moscow State Civil-Engineering University. According to Sorochan Konyukhov; It is proposed to use foundations with anchors for the construction of high-rise buildings. Friction piles rigidly fixed to a monolithic reinforced-concrete slab are used as anchors. A 70-story 210-m-high building is analyzed for different types of foundations. Settlements and Tilts based on mathematical modelling are compared with reliable values established by the Construction Rules and Regulations. Design of piled raft foundation on soft ground Reference: report from; Y.C.Tan director, Gue partners Sdn Bhd, Kuala Lampur,Malaysia. C.M.Chow Senior Geo-technical Engineer, Gue Partners Sdn Bhd, Kuala Lampur,Malaysia. According to Y.C.Tan C.M.Chow; A design approach for piled-raft foundation system using settlement reducing piles on soft ground is presented. The design approach is divided in to two categories, i.e for low rise and medium high rise the piled raft system is generally based on the concept of settlement reducing piles to control local deformation where piles of short length are strategically located beneath concentrated loads. for medium rise buildings, piles of varying lengths with the longest piles in the middle and progressively shorter piles towards the edge are adopted to control differential settlement within allowable limits. Various design cases must be considered for the design of piled-raft using settlement reducing piles to ensure adequate provisions of pile and design of strip raft for low rise buildings while an interactive analysis to model pile -soil-structure is proposed to analyse medium-rise buildings. BEDS AND FOUNDATIONS OF HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS Reference: Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Vol. 40, No. 5, 2003 pg; 173-175 by S. B. Ukhov, Scientific-Research Institute of Foundations and Underground Structures. According to Ukhov; Bed and foundation problems occupy a special place in the design and construction of high-rise buildings. This results from the fact that the average pressures over the footprints of the buildings reach 0.5-0.8 MPa, and occasionally more. For the relatively deep bedrock in Moscow, these pressures are frequently transmitted onto soils of Quaternary deposits possessing elevated compressibility. At the same time, requirements for limiting deformations of the beds, especially for their non uniformity and tilting of the buildings remain extremely rigid. The following are currently recommended as basic types of foundations for high-rise buildings: pile, combined piled-raft, and slab, including foundations with increased stiffness (box foundations). Deep foundations, which are supported on fissured limestones, as has occurred, for example, in the construction of the underground bridge in the zone where the third transportation beltway intersects the Lenin Avenue metro station in the area of Gargarin Square, can be used for heavily loaded foundations in particularly complex cases. GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITHTHE CONSTRUCTION OF HIGH-RISE BUILDINGS. FOREIGN EXPERIENCE AND DOMESTIC PRACTICE Reference; Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Vol. 40, No. 5, 2003,pg 176-184 V. M. Ulitskii, A. G. Shashkin, and K. G. Shashkin Saint Petersburg State University for means of Communication; and, Scientific-Production Union Georekonstruktsiya Fundamentproekt. According to V. M. Ulitskii, A. G. Shashkin, and K. G. Shashkin; The concept of the piled-raft foundation assumes the transfer of some of the load from the building through the lower surface of the slab grillage . Here, the fraction of the load taken up by the slab grillage plays a basic role in the design. According to experience gained with the design of pile foundations at the Institute of Geo-technics in Darmstadt, the portion of the load taken up by the grillage slab is assigned by the designer. It is assumed that during deformation, excess loads from the piles will be transmitted onto the grillage slab; this will, as a result, also lead to an assumed distribution of pressure. Here, of course, it is considered that the settlements of the piled-raft foundation may be appreciably higher than those of a pile foundation, and may approach the settlements of a building on a slab in terms of value. It is precisely this situation that has obviously prohibited application of the concept of the piled-raft foundation to the building housing Commerce Bank II for which the requirements regarding settlements were extremely stringent. Observations made with respect to pressure transducers indicated that a slab grillage does not transmit pressures to the bed soil. On the whole, worldwide experience gained with the design and construction of high-rise buildings indicates that only high technologies of work production combined with profound analytical drafting of the design, and detailed investigations of interaction between the bed soils and building structures will make it possible to erect high-rise buildings in a fail-safe manner, including those constructed under the complex geotechnical conditions of Saint Petersburg. There is no doubt that beyond the dependence on the construction site, the erection and subsequent occupancy of high-rise buildings should be accompanied by a set of scientific measures, including a system of observations on the interaction between the basic bearing structures and bed soils. USING SETTLEMENT-CONTROL PILES TO ENHANCE MAT FOUNDATION OF A HIGH-RISE BUILDING IN ORLANDO Reference; Amr M. Sallam, Ph.D., P.E., M. ASCE, Associate Vice President, Nodarse Associates, Inc., Winter Park, Florida, USA:[emailprotected] S.E. Jim Jammal, P.E., M. ASCE, Executive Vice President, Nodarse Associates, Inc., Winter Park, Florida, USA:[emailprotected] According to Amr M Sallam Jim Jammal ; A piled raft foundation is a system in which the total structural load is supported partially by the raft (mat) through contact with the soil and the piles usually by friction. A piled raft foundation is economical because the utilized piles are usually short since they do not have to extend to a sound bearing layer. The piled raft foundation undergoes settlement that is more than that of pile foundations and less than that of mat foundations. Piled raft foundations were used to support bridges, high rise buildings, and heavy industrial plants. Most of the piled raft research concentrated on the load distribution between that mat and the piles. Analytical solutions as well as linear and nonlinear two and three dimensional Finite Element Analysis are available to optimize the piled raft design. Although a pronounced piled raft foundation was not utilized in the presented case history, the authors utilized the idea of using short frictional piles to control settlement of the mat foundation. A peer review and additional exploration study was performed by the authors to evaluate the most economical foundation system for a Downtown Orlando mixed-use building. Original design called for deep foundations in the form of Augered-Cast-In-Place piles. An alternative foundation system that consisted of solid mat foundations with settlement-control piles was recommended. The settlement-control piles were utilized below the heavily loaded column, where higher contact pressure were observed. This foundation system required continuous coordination between the geotechnical and structural engineer. The settlement-control piles was modeled in the mat structural analysis program as points of higher stiffness than the mat. The results of two static pile load tests were used to estimate the actual pile stiffness within the design load of the pile. A number of columns were monitored for settlement during and after construction. The measured settlement were substantially lower than the predi cted settlement, which proved the efficiency of the recommended mat foundation with settlement-control piles. SLAB-PILE FOUNDATION FOR A HIGH-RISE BUILDING Reference: Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, Vol. 45, No. 1, 2008 pg; 17-22. R.A.Mangushev, A.V.Igoshin, N.V.Oshurkov, and A.B. Fadeev Saint Petersburg State Architectural and Civil Engineering University. According to R.A.Mangushev, A.V.Igoshin, N.V.Oshurkov, and A.B. Fadeev; A slab-pile foundation (SPF) belongs to that group of floating piles with a low slab grillage, which provides for the transfer of a portion of the load onto the soil directly through the lower surface of the grillage. SPF had become popular after several high-rise buildings had been erected on them in Frankfurt (Germany) on a thick stratum of indigenous clay. As compared with a purely slab foundation, an SPF has insignificant settlement and a lower probability of tilting. At the same time, it is more economical than a purely pile foundation where the entire load is transferred onto the piles. SPF hold promise for widespread use in the construction of tower buildings, large tanks, and other similar entities. According to author; It is difficult to analyze the causes of significant deviations in computed SPF settlements from the actual settlement based on one-time analyses. More probably, settlements on the high side, which were obtained by layer-by-layer summation even with a limitation placed on the depth of the compressible stratum with respect to a criterion of 0.5, are caused by data presented by survey organizations, where the compression modulus of the soils had been appreciably underestimated. The experience gained with installation of the SPF has therefore been successful. The actual settlement of the building is lower than the computed value, and lower than the limiting allowable settlement. There is virtually no tilt. The iteration method used to analyze the settlement of the SPF is guaranteed devoid of gross errors, and yields a cautious and, not-underestimated assessment of expected settlement.

10 Fascinating Facts About Cockroaches

Nobody wants to see a cockroach scurrying under the fridge when flipping on the light switch. These creatures arent exactly revered. Entomologists know otherwise, though; these insects are actually rather cool. Here are 10 fascinating facts about cockroaches that just might persuade you to think differently about them. 1. Most Species Are Not Pests What image do you conjure up when you hear the word cockroach? For most people, its a dark, dirty city apartment teeming with cockroaches. In truth, very few cockroach species inhabit human dwellings. We know of some 4,000 species of cockroaches on the planet, most of which inhabit forests, caves, burrows, or brush.  Only about 30 species like to live where people do. In the U.S., the two most common species are the German cockroach, known as  Blattella germanica, and the American cockroach,  Periplaneta americana. 2. Cockroaches Are Scavengers Most roaches prefer sugar and other sweets, but they will eat just about anything: glue, grease, soap, wallpaper paste, leather, bookbindings, even hair. And cockroaches can survive a remarkably long time without food. Some species can go as long as six weeks without a meal. In nature, cockroaches provide an important service by consuming organic waste. As with houseflies, when cockroaches take up residence among humans, they can become vehicles for spreading diseases as they scuttle about the home. Feeding on waste, trash, and food, they leave germs and droppings in their wake. 3. Theyve Been Around For a Long Time If you could travel back to the Jurassic period and walk among the dinosaurs, you would easily recognize the cockroaches crawling under logs and stones in prehistoric forests. The modern cockroach first came to be about 200 million years ago. Primitive roaches appeared even earlier, about 350 million years ago, during the Carboniferous period. The fossil record shows that Paleozoic roaches had an external ovipositor, a trait that disappeared during the Mesozoic era. 4. Cockroaches Like to Be Touched Roaches are thigmotropic, meaning they like feeling something solid in contact with their bodies, preferably on all sides. They seek out cracks and crevices, squeezing into spaces that offer them the comfort of a tight fit. The small German cockroach can fit into a crack as thin as a dime, while the larger American cockroach will squeeze into a space no thicker than a quarter. Even a pregnant female can manage a crevice as thin as two stacked nickels. Cockroaches are also social creatures, preferring to live in multigenerational nests that can range from a few bugs to several dozen. In fact, according to research, cockroaches that dont share the company of others can become ill or unable to mate. 5. They Lay Eggs, Lots of Them Mama cockroach protects her eggs by enveloping them in a thick protective case, called an ootheca. German cockroaches may encase as many as 40 eggs in one ootheca, while the larger American roaches average about 14 eggs per capsule. A female cockroach can produce multiple egg cases over her lifetime. In some species, the mother will carry the ootheca with her until the eggs are ready to hatch. In others, the female will drop the ootheca or attach it to a substrate. 6. Roaches Love Bacteria For millions of years, cockroaches have carried on a symbiotic relationship with special bacteria called Bacteroides. These bacteria live within special cells called mycetocytes and are passed down to new generations of cockroaches by their mothers. In exchange for living a life of relative comfort inside the cockroachs fatty tissue, the Bacteroides manufacture all the vitamins and amino acids the cockroach needs to live. 7. Cockroaches Dont Need Heads to Survive Lop the head off a roach, and a week or two later it will still respond to stimuli by wiggling its legs. Why? Surprisingly, its head isnt all that important to how a cockroach functions. Cockroaches have open circulatory systems, so as long as the wound clots normally, they arent prone to bleeding out. Their respiration occurs via spiracles along the sides of the body. Eventually, the headless cockroach will either dehydrate or succumb to mold. 8. Theyre Fast Cockroaches detect approaching threats by sensing changes in air currents. The fastest start time clocked by a cockroach was just 8.2 milliseconds after it sensed a puff of air on its rear end. Once all six legs are in motion, a cockroach can sprint at speeds of 80 centimeters per second, or about 1.7 miles per hour. And theyre elusive, too, with the ability to turn on a dime while in full stride. 9. Tropical Roaches Are Big Most domestic roaches dont come close to the size of their giant, tropical cousins. Megaloblatta longipennis boasts a wingspan of 7 inches. The Australian rhinoceros cockroach,  Macropanesthia rhinoceros,  measures about 3 inches and can weigh 1 ounce or more. The giant cave cricket, Blaberus giganteus, is even larger, reaching 4 inches at maturity.   10. Cockroaches Can Be Trained Makoto Mizunami and Hidehiro Watanabe, two scientists at Japans Tohoku University, found cockroaches could be conditioned much like dogs. They introduced the scent of vanilla or peppermint just before giving the roaches a sugary treat. Eventually, the cockroaches would drool when their antennae detected one of these scents in the air. More Crazy Cockroach Facts Its often been said that cockroaches are so hardy that they can survive a nuclear explosion. Although the bugs can survive levels of radiation that would kill a human being within minutes, higher levels of exposure can be deadly. In one experiment, cockroaches were exposed to 10,000 rads of radiation, about the same amount as the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan during World War II. Only about 10 percent of the test subjects survived. These hardly bugs can also hold their breath for 4 to 7 minutes at a time.
